Six ways to meet a new man

By: Lizzie Cernik

Sitting around waiting for prince charming to arrive on his white horse is a bit 17thCentury don't you think? It might have worked for Cinderella but these days a bit of effort is required to find yourself a knight in shining armour. Although many of us meet guys on nights out, it can be tricky if all your friends are loved up or you're busy with work. If you've been struggling to meet new people, here's a few ideas on how to make new friends and possibly find a date.

1. Join a  gym

It's a well known fact that gyms are packed with buff men just waiting to ask us out. OK that's not strictly true. But gym classes are a good way to meet new people and you never know who might be hanging out at your next pump class. Even if you don't meet the man of your dreams, at least you'll be one step closer to Jessica Ennis abs.

2. Take up a hobby

Common interests are one of the most important factors in a relationship. If you're keen to meet someone new why not follow your passions and see what you find? Whether it's diving, beach volleyball or art lessons, you're bound to find people who share your interests. At the very least you might make some new friends. Word of caution though, you probably won't meet too many men if you join a flower arranging class.

3. Join a dating website

Not necessarily the most romantic way to meet a man, but dating websites are becoming increasingly popular.  A good way to ensure you meet someone who's looking for the same things as you, these websites can help you find your match. If you're going to give it a whirl just be as honest as possible and don't take it too seriously. If nothing else you might get a giggle out of making your profile page.

4. Through friends

Ask your friends if they know any nice single men they could introduce you to. Less scary than a blind date, you could go out as a group to a brunch and get to know each other. The bonus of meeting a new man through friends is that you're likely to have a few things it common. However, if you do start dating, make sure you take it slowly. The last thing you want is a difficult break up if you move in the same social circles.

5. Social networking

Spend lots of time on Twitter or Facebook chatting to like minded people? Why not arrange to meet up and make your friendship a reality? Less daunting than online dating, you might find one of your virtual followers turns into a real life romance.

6. Speed dating

If you're short on time (or just fancy a laugh) why not give speed dating a whirl? Giving you the opportunity to meet lots of men in a short space of time, you'll need to be good at selling yourself in under five minutes.
