This event lasts from seven to nine days
Last week was the 2015 Fashion Week. This is an
international event and is held so that fashion collections can be shown
to buyers. The fashion show was held in New York. Others are held in
Paris, London and Milan.
When the first Fashion Week in New York was held in 1943,
it was then called “press week.” This originated to take away attention
from the French fashion during World War II. That was when fashion
industries were unable to travel to Paris to see the French fashion
show.
During the time when it was called press week, it was used
so that magazines such as Vogue could write articles about the upcoming
fashions.
In 1993, the Council of Fashion Designers of America
decided the New York fashion week would then be moved to Bryant Park
covered with white tents and would be attended by invitation only.
In 2010, the location then changed again to the Lincoln
Center for the Performing Arts. Since 2007, the New York Fashion Week
has been named the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York.
This year was exceptionally memorable because actress
Jamie Brewer became the first woman with Down syndrome to walk the red
carpet at New York Fashion Week. You may have seen her on the hit
television show, American Horror Story.
Jamie Brewer modeled for Carrie Hammer’s “Role Models Not
Runway Models.” Carrie wanted her collection to not be just about
clothing, but also more about who was wearing her clothing.
The title, “Role Models Not Runway Models,” symbolized who
she wanted representing her clothing line, and Jamie Brewer was the
perfect fit for that position.
Every year fashion week is something to look forward to
for those fashion lovers, but this year, the designers turned it into
more than just clothing and created an image that even women with Down
syndrome can be a model. That made the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New
York all that more exciting and unforgettable.
Now designers everywhere are preparing for the next fashion week in September.
