Islamabad Police admit security breach as Sikh community storms Parliament House

ISLAMABAD – Following the protest by Sikh community and storming on the Parliament House, Inspector General of Islamabad Police Altaf Cheema on Friday accepted that it was a security breach for which the police was to be blamed.

Speaking to journalists here, the police chief also accepted that despite repeated calls by Bara Kahu Station House Officer (SHO) Sattar Shah no steps were taken to stop the protesters. The police officials on duty stated that they did not take action against the protestors as they did not receive any orders from the top officials.

Crossing all barricades, the Sikh protestors first entered the Parliament House parking area by crossing the highly sensitive government offices including the Prime Minister’s Secretariat, Supreme Court of Pakistan, Diplomatic Enclave, Foreign Office, and the Radio Pakistan.

The incident was an eye-opener for the authorities whose claim of ‘tight-security’ in the red zone was refuted. It was also indicative of the consistent breach of rights of other religious factions in the country and their growing frustration.

It is significant to recall that there are approximately 20,000 adherents of Sikhism in Pakistan. Earlier in March this year, Sikh residents of Peshawar had protested against the killing of a Sikh hakim in Charsadda and the abduction of two others in Dera Ismail Khan.

Earlier, Acting National Assembly Speaker Murtaza Javed Abbasi taking serious notice of the failure of the police to stop protesters of the Sikh community to enter into the precinct of the Parliament House sought report from the Ministry of Interior Affiars and the Inspector General of the Islamabad Police.


He called the incident a failure and incompetence of the police who have failed to devise any strategy in this regard. He directed the ministry to enquire into the incident and take appropriate action against the responsible and sought report of the investigation of two such incidents which took place in the recent past.

On the other hand, Senate Chairman Nayyer Hussain Bokhari also took notice of the incident and directed the government to provide its details when Senator Hemman Das drew the attention of the chair towards the issue inside the house. “Parliament House’s security should be ensured at all cost,” the chairman maintained.
